Maqatir Monastery Money 2/15/2019 - by Scott Stripling DMin

A coin inscribed with “King Agrippa” was recently found by an Israeli boy on a school trip. This is the same Agrippa who had the Apostle James murdered and who jailed the Apostle Peter.

This fascinating story was recently featured in a news report filed by the Christian News Network with an interview with ABR’s Director of Excavations, Dr. Scott Stripling, and ABR’s Director, Scott Lanser.

Dr. Stripling pointed out that the Agrippa coin that was discovered was the same type of Agrippa coin discovered by ABR’s archaeologists at Khirbet el-Maqatir (the site ABR believes is the Conquest city of Ai). Dr. Stripling wrote about the Agrippa coin discovered at Maqatir in an article for ABR’s Bible and Spade magazine entitled, Maqatir Monastery Money, which we share here as our bonus article for the month of February.

I Have Seen It All!!! 8/30/2015 - by Scott Stripling DMin

A friend at church recently told me that he would like to go with me to Israel, but he and his wife had been there in 2010, and thanks to a great tour guide, had seen everything. I chuckled to his face, but laughed hysterically once I reached the social safety of my Toyota Yaris. Long ago I lost count of how many times I have been in Israel and Jordan, yet on each new trip I manage to see many new sites.

The Destruction of Antiquities 10/22/2014 - by Scott Stripling DMin

Archaeological sites are in danger around the Ancient Near East. While there are antiquities laws in place throughout the region, they rarely suffice to deter the destruction. Once the crime is committed, the data is irretrievably lost, or at best, it is devalued. The plot of Clive Cussler’s best-selling novel, Crescent Dawn, portrays the conflict between those who want to preserve antiquities and those who want to plunder or destroy them. Sadly, this goes far beyond fictional depictions. There are four main causes of the destruction of antiquities...

The Benefit of the Doubt 3/17/2014 - by Scott Stripling DMin

Recently, archaeological remains were discovered in Jerusalem that affirmed the presence of Hasmoneans in Jerusalem during the second century BC. This was in accord with historical texts, such as the book of 1 Maccabees. In this brief article, Dr. Scott Stripling illustrates how the principle of the "benefit of the doubt" is often applied to some written texts, but with a double standard when it comes to King David and the Bible.
